TITLE : Come what May

Artist Statement: Danyelle Yoder is a deep-thinker and an old soul. She finds inspiration in the principals of life, the music that conveys it honestly and people that carry strength. Her expressive portraits convey a sense of purpose and destiny as if the subjects have risen from turmoil and gained an unshakeable determination. She says, “I am forever inspired by timeless faces, earthy colors and a common story of triumph. I love windows to souls and the resilience behind them. If I can release work that nods to the hardships of life and wrap it with a sense of petrichor then I have done my job.. I call viewers to hope and resilience.”

Mural Statement: Sensing a shift in seasons she faces the heat. Internally bracing. Not turning to hide or run or cower, she’ll stand, come what may.

death’s-head moth mural

Artist Statement: Korinne Faye is a mixed-media artist who dabbles in many mediums in order to create the right texture for her pieces- from wandering in the woods looking for the right stick to being curled up and drawing digitally, she is always looking for the right material to make her work just feel "right". She graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design with a BFA in Film/Animation/Video in 2017, and recently moved to Indiana from Massachusetts.

Mural Statement: Death’s-Head Moths are a real insect and for Korinne, this mural explores the tendancy people have to overlook the small things, how we quickly rush by and do not observe the small wonders surrounding us. As an introvert herself, she finds herself looking down at the ground and observing things that other passers-by miss.

Recently, she has been listening to the horror podcast "The Magnus Archives''; it really pushes the idea that an entity is always watching over something. She felt like the union of the superstitious death's-head hawkmoth surrounded with eyes that are always observing created an uneasy, yet peaceful environment that she wanted to explore in her mural.

Despite their looks, death’s-head hawkmoth’s are not what they seem. In most media they are represented in a negative light, their most popular appearance being on the poster for Silence of the Lambs, a psychological horror film. Korinne wants to allow people to see the moth in their natural habitat verses a pop culture reference.

In reality, Death’s-Head moths are harmless and have a very organic diet. Death’s-Head moths are one of the wonders of creation — they are extraordinarily scarce, strikingly large, with a skull-like marking on its thorax and the ability to squeak when alarmed.

On May 22, 2023, Dakota Mace started working on his mural creation (“Everything I’ve Seen is Who I’ve Become”) which you can observe coming to life on the Southwest corner of the front of our building.

Artist Statement: My connection to the world lies mostly in the comfort that biology has brought me. The complexities that exist around us inspire me to share them with others. I wish to communicate the beauty of life’s small moments, whether it be on a molecular or social plane. For the last 7 years, the principles of form, color, and movement have become the best way for me to express this comfort. Through different mediums — fiber, ink, oil, acrylic — I feel as though I can better share the world with the others who inhabit it.

wind movements mural

Artist Statement: Bridget O’Brien is a painter living and working in Northeast Indiana. She received her BFA in painting from Indiana University in 2020. She works primarily with pastel, acrylic, and watercolor. Growing up in transit between Windsor, ON, and Fort Wayne, IN, drawing became a labyrinthian practice to pass the ample time spent on greyhound buses. This time, spent watching the rolling landscapes of decaying Rustbelt met with the natural beauty of Midwestern forests, cultivated a proclivity towards capturing nature and decay. Her current body of work, Climate of the Terrestrial Womb, seeks to understand the relationship between Climate Change and Motherhood.

Mural Statement: The purpose of this mural is to expand upon and share with the Art Community, her thesis, Climate of the Terrestrial Womb.

This body of work features three large oil paintings, punctuated by watercolor studies of landscapes and wildlife, poetry, and sculptural works— soda and wood fired, as well as pieces cultivated from found objects. These components combined create an installation reminiscent of a modern living room; the oil paintings sharing one continual horizon line, evoking the illusion of windows. This series seeks to explore combined themes of Climate Change and Maternal Drive; the intersection to which involves a great deal of personal and global anxiety. It seemed fitting that the process of creating these paintings was interrupted by a global pandemic; deepening the caverns of fear that intimately punctuate this body of work.

The Mural, then, possesses a unique attribute to this series; as it is able to be removed from the space, but will be created with and for the public. This way, the duel purposes of Environmental Advocacy and Creative Collaboration will be achieved.

Bridget wishes to ask the public: to what extent do we hold responsibility; for my body is capable of both depletion and exploitation, as well as the creation of art and human life? In creating an image that is reminiscent of God, she proposes an intense cultivation of ethical questions about the nature of consumption itself, and how nurturing our environment as God nurtures us, we can form a relationship with our Earth that is loving and hopeful.
